Joda/Jhumpura: An elephant calf was found dead in the forest near Hatimara Chhak under Champua range in Keonjhar district, Thursday.
According to forester Jatindra Sahu, the calf had died during its delivery at 9 pm Wednesday. Locals had seen the mother elephant keeping a close watch on its calf.
The forest officials were intimated. A team of forest officials including Champua ranger Ghasinath Patra, Bamebari forester Jatindra Sahu and four forest guards rushed to the spot. Post mortem of the carcass was conducted and it was buried later.
However, some villagers claimed that the calf had been lying dead for last several days.
