Elephant calf found dead in Odisha’s Keonjhar district

Hatadihi: The carcass of an elephant calf was found Sunday inside Hadagarh Wildlife Sanctuary under Anandapur forest division in this block of Keonjhar district.

Forest department officials informed that the calf was around 5 to 6 years old. They added that they had difficulty in retrieving the carcass as the entire herd stood on guard for a substantial period of time and refused to leave the area.

DFO Abhay Kumar Dalei, who visited the spot along with other officials, informed that the calf had died due to a fight with another ‘rouge’ elephant.

Officials later conducted a post-mortem and then buried the carcass in the forest. They said that they would be only able to ascertain the real cause of the elephant’s death after getting the post-mortem report.
