Dhenkanal: Forest personnel rescued an elephant calf which had fallen into a well at a farm in Dhenkanal district Monday.
The one-year-old female elephant was rescued from the open well at Bangursingh village under Odapada block. Villagers noticed the calf in the well and reported the matter to the forest personnel.
After the calf fell into the well its herd members stay put near the Brahmani riverbank and trumpeted aloud triggering panic among the villagers.
Forest personnel after rescuing the calf released it in the nearby forest but it came back soon as the herd members refused to accept it. The forest officials made another attempt to release the calf in the jungle and this time it worked as the mother elephant accepted the calf.
Assistant conservator of forests Jeetendra Nath Das said over 70 elephants divided into three herds have unleashed a reign of terror in the area. The forest officials are keeping a track on the movement of the elephants and doing their bit to prevent the animals from entering human habitations.
