Sambalpur: The carcass of an adult elephant was found in a partially decomposed state in a forest under Kisinda Khalasuni Sanctuary Range in Rairakhol sub-division of Sambalpur district Thursday.
A few local people first spotted the carcass and immediately informed the forest department about the incident.
Later, a forest department team and officials from Bamra Wildlife Division reached the spot and recovered the carcass.
According to locals, the pachyderm had not been in a very good condition for the last couple of days. It had been limping due to a leg injury. The injury had eventually restricted its movement.
The Bamra Wildlife Division officials have launched an investigation to find out how the elephant sustained the injury.
Notably, a seven-year-old elephant suffering from septicemia breathed its last while under treatment inside Lahada Reserve Forest under Sarangi range in Dhenkanal district October 23. The same day, a decomposed carcass of a tusker was found from a farmland under Pallahara forest division in Angul district. It had a deep wound on its head.
