Keonjhar/Jhumpura: People in Champua range of Keonjhar district were panicked as elephants have been on a damaging spree for quite some time.
A herd of 24 elephants has reportedly pulled down 12 houses in the area Wednesday night. Locals said the animals were holed up in Khuntapal forest and came out at night and damaged houses of Sombar Bentekar, Srimati Bentekar, Kirtan Bentakar and others, apart from eating paddy and rice stocks in their houses.
Famers claimed the animals have caused extensive damage to paddy and vegetable crops. A team of forest officials from Balibandh rushed to the spot and launched an operation to drive away the pachyderms.
