Elephants trample elderly man to death

Sambalpur: In a tragic incident, an elderly man was trampled to death by two wild elephants at Baham village under Jujumura block in this district Sunday morning.

The deceased was identified as Biranchi Narayan Panda (72).

According to reports, the incident occurred while Panda had gone to collect mangoes from a nearby forest in the morning. Suddenly, he came across two wild pachyderms that had strayed into the mango orchard Saturday night. The animals trampled Panda to death.

Hearing the man’s screams, some locals rushed to the spot and tried to drive away the elephants but in vain.

After getting information, forest officials reached the spot and drove away the elephants to the forest. The body was later seized and sent for post-mortem.

Meanwhile the locals demanded compensation for the bereaved family. The forest officials assured that they would provide the necessary compensation as per government norms.

An elderly woman was trampled to death by a jumbo in Narsinghpur area of Cuttack district Saturday.
