England players opt for boiled food

BHUBANESWAR: The English management had announced last Saturday that their players who are in the city for the men’s Hockey World Cup will not take meals at the hotel where they have been put up. Instead, they will have their food cooked at the nearby restaurant.

This decision came in the wake of the fact that the last time the team visited the city during the Hockey World League Finals in December last year, three of their players – David Ames, Harry Martin and Brendan Creed – fell ill due to stomach bug.

While the breakfast is being sent to the players at their hotel rooms, the players are coming down to the restaurant for lunch and dinner every day. The restaurant authorities have also set up billiards and table tennis tables so that the players can chill out while there.

Orissa POST learnt that the England players are mostly having boiled and baked dishes in their meals. Right now there is no Indian dish, but they are contemplating to have some included later.

“The players are having their meals as prescribed by their dietician. The menu includes boiled and baked items like chicken, smoothie, noodles, fish, boiled vegetables and baked sweet potato,” a source said Tuesday.

The source also added that the players are very happy with the food and are enjoying their time here. European countries mostly have beef in their meal, but going with the Indian culture, the England management has agreed to cut down on beef.
