Environmental activists give new lease of life to finch hatchlings

Berhampur: A group of environmental activists have given a new lease of life to at least five hatchlings of Scaly Breasted Munia also known as Spice Finch in the pet trade.

According to reports, the regional development council had installed an artificial nest at Amar Swain’s house at Omm Nagar in this town of Ganjam district three months ago under the sparrow conservation drive.

Some of the finches were living in the artificial nest made up of bamboo. However, one of the finches built a nest of its own and laid eggs a few days ago. From the eggs, only five hatchlings survived.

However, strong winds blew the nest off the house ledge Saturday.

Amar immediately informed Sagar Kumar Patra, president of the regional development council, who along with some environmental activists – Banamali Pradhan, P Arvind and Bijendra Majhi – reached the spot and rescued the finch hatchlings.

They installed a new artificial nest and provided shelter to the hatchlings of the endangered species. A few moments later, the mother finch returned to the nest.
