Bhubaneswar: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the state Crime Branch Tuesday arrested a person on charges of duping a bank with of lakhs. The accused was identified as Devadutta Smantray of Tikanpur village under Patkura police limits in Kendrapara.
According to sources, Samantray along with 147 others availed loans under KHG Personal Loan scheme to the tune of around Rs 2.96 crore from Bilhart branch of Odisha Gramya Bank in Cuttack between 2011 and 2012. The accused with the help of bank authorities of the branch forged documents and falsely identified themselves as teachers and staffers of different schools in Kendrapara to avail the loans.
Samantray also availed a Rs 2-lakh loan from the branch by posing himself as a Hindi teacher in Raichand Girl’s High School in Kendrapara June 4, 2011.
Subsequently, a case has been registered by the EOW based on the complaint lodged by General Manager (Vigilance) Odisha Gramya Branch in Bhubaneswar in 2013.
Earlier, the sleuths had arrested 16 accused persons including the then bank manager and field officer who are currently in jail. Similarly, 74 persons who were arrested in the case are currently on bail. Samantray was sent to judicial custody after being produced before the court Tuesday.
