Evacuation by cops draws praise on social media

Kendrapara: The police effort to evacuate people from remote coastal pockets before Fani hit the district has won praise on social media.

Generally the men in khaki of Kendrapara hog the limelight for the wrong reasons, but this time the public came forward wholeheartedly to praise the cops for lending a hand to evacuate people from vulnerable coastal pockets before the cyclone made landfall.

Photos of cops evacuating people have gone viral on social media.

In one photo, the IIC of Talachua Marine Police Station, Srikant Barik, is seen with a child on his lap while evacuating the inhabitants of Khasmunda to a nearby cyclone shelter. In another photo that went viral lady constable Priti Parida is seen evacuating the women of Pattaparia village on a bike.

The Talachua Marine Police led by its IIC evacuated around 2,000 people from coastal villages.

The humanitarian gesture of the police personnel has changed the image of the police in general. The district police also sent relief items to the worst Fani hit district of Puri Thursday.

When contacted, Kendrapara SP Niti Sekhar said the time available for evacuating people was very less. “When the situation demanded direct involvement of the police, I directed all police stations to evacuate people,” the SP added.

“Evacuating people was our duty and our men and women did a tremendous job. Yes, the lady constable of Talachua Marine Police Station, Priti Parida, the IIC, Srikant Barik, and some others put in extra efforts to evacuate people. This went viral on social media and they have won accolades for the police department. They will be decorated,” the SP said.
