Evictions for new road, hockey WC

Bhubaneswar: The joint enforcement squad of Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation carried out two evictions Monday.

The one done along the Sainik School-Damana stretch was to make way for the Left Parallel Road of the ambitious Alternative Road Network (ARN), while the other was between Sashtri Nagar and The World to ensure land clearance for a bus shelter and other requirements for the ensuing Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2018.

Several asbestos houses, wooden cabins and kiosks besides some other structures were demolished. Three excavators were used for the operation.

Among others, BDA enforcement officer-II Pramod Kumar Patra,  liaison officer Subhransu Sekhar Mohanty, IIC Saheed Nagar PS Padamanabha Pradhan, assistant engineer (Division-I) BDA Rebati Kanungo besides police were present.

Earlier October 13 last year, senior BDA officials had made an on-the-spot inquiry and initiated the first step towards opening of the Damana-Gadakana Road from Damana Square to Netaji Subhash Enclave.

The path of the alternative road (Right Parallel) would be Damana Square-Netaji Subhash Enclave-East Coast Railway area-Sainik School-Sainik School Square on Acharya Vihar-Kalinga Hospital Road and vice-versa. It may be mentioned that with the congestion on the Airport-Nandankanan road increasing day by day, the Odisha government has planned to have two alternate road networks.

The Sainik School-Damana Road would provide a convenient bypass for the people to reach Sainik School Square by taking the left turn from Damana Square, while coming from the Nandankanan end and also the vice versa, once the road is functional.

Sources said, the Damana-Gadakana road was planned long ago to help more than 20,000 in the Gadakana and Mancheswar area.  People staying in Netaji Subhash Enclave in Gadakana with 304 dwelling units, belonging to HIG and HIG Deluxe category, would also get benefited from it.

Just like the Sainik School-Damana by-pass, another road network along the other side of the Jaydev Vihar-Nandankana road would be developed joining Ekamra Kanan and Niladri Vihar-Sailashri Vihar creating a parallel by-pass to decongest the growing traffic in the city. Named the Left Parallel Road, the process for environmental clearance of the land needed for it has started.

The joint enforcement squad of BDA and BMC removed several types of unauthorised structures on the roadside from Sashtri Nagar to The World. The land will be used for projects for the ensuing Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2018.
