Chhatrapur: A man beat his wife to death over a domestic dispute and subsequently surrendered in the police station at Narendrapur village under Chamakhandi police limits in Ganjam district Monday.
The incident has spread shockwaves in the area. The accused B Babula Senapati (42), an ex-serviceman, assaulted his wife B Lisarani with an iron bar right in front of his six-year-old son.
Chhatrapur sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Ramesh Chandra Sethy and Chamakhandi IIC Chitaranjan Behera rushed to the spot and launched an investigation. The police seized the body and the iron bar used in the killing. A forensic team from Berhampur was also pressed into service.
A case was registered over a complaint lodged by the brother of the deceased and the body was sent for post-mortem. Lisarani’s family members held her in-laws responsible for her death.
Preliminary investigation suggested that the murder took place over a domestic dispute. Police said the couple was not on good terms and often used to fight at frequent intervals. Villagers had earlier convened a meeting to resolve their dispute but in vain, it was learnt.
The crime took place after Babula came back home after dropping his daughter at school and picked up a fight with his wife, according to police.
