Rayagada: Lack of road connectivity forced an expectant mother to walk about three kilometres and to wade through knee-deep water of a river to avail medical help in this district.
According to a source, Sunu Huika — wife of Kamalesh Huika of Sarapai village near Rayagada town — complained of labour pain Saturday morning.
To reach the district headquarters hospital, which is only about five kilometres away from Sarapai, she had to follow a narrow track from her village through Jhabati river. Vehicle services are only available across the river.
An Anganwadi worker and an ASHA staff who were waiting for her on the other side of the river took her to the DHH where she was immediately attended to by the doctors. Sunu delivered a baby girl shortly after.
Both the mother and the child are in good health, thankfully.
