Koraput: Acting on reliable information, a police team conducted sudden raid and intercepted two explosives-laden vehicles and five persons arrested from Pottangi area here in this district late Friday night, police sources said.
The apprehended persons have been identified as K Rama Krushna (driver), Upendra Naidu, J Laxmi Narayan, S Bunty Mala and Narasingha Rao. As per reports, three among the five accused are from Semiliguda area in Koraput while the other two are from Punduru area of neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.
While no exact reason of who the five are and where were they taking the explosives was known, police continued the interrogation of the five to extract more information. Even as the explosives are suspected to be used for blasting in stone quarries, police suspect that the materials were likely to be delivered for Maoists.
A probe into all the angle is on, a senior police official said.
According to sources, a six-wheeler Truck laden with the explosives was en route to Semiliguda from Andra Pradesh. While two were taking the truck, three others on a car were following it. Acting on some information, the local police chased the vehicle and intercepted the vehicles near Koraput.
During search, the raid team recovered huge cache of explosives materials including 25,000 gelatin stick, 38 bands of the codex and around 10,000 detonators. Following this, the cops apprehended five persons involved in the illegal transportation and seized the six-wheeler Truck and a car.
“This type of explosives are used for the purpose of store quarrying. However, we suspect that the miscreants were delivering it to Maoists. Probe is on into all angles,” a senior police officer said.
While the arrested persons are in police custody and are being interrogated, a detailed investigation into the case is underway, sources in the police added.
