Polasara: Several transformers and meter boxes installed at public places in this town have been lying uncovered over the years, posing a threat to lives, but the energy department seems unconcerned about the looming hazard, a report said.
Resentment is brewing among locals over the casual approach of the department.
For instance, a transformer near Belgaon under this block in Ganjam district has been installed near the main road. As hundreds of vehicles ply on the road every day, it poses serious threat to lives. Even as locals have been demanding relocation of the transformer for years, the department is yet to take any steps in this regard.
The officials are only buying time for its shifting. This unguarded transformer can cause a major mishap at any moment, said locals. They have been demanding a fence around the transformer to avoid any kind of untoward incident, but to no avail.
As no iron fence has been put up around the transformer, roadside vendors are seen selling their wares under these electrical transformers risking their lives. These transformers often generate sparks leaving the locals in panic.
On the other hand, the joint meter boxes installed for market complexes are on the verge of collapse.
“We have submitted written complaints to all the departments including the junior engineer, executive engineer, lineman, BDO and the Collector, but no steps have been taken so far,” Sanatan Pradhan and Suresh Maharana said.
Irate villagers warned of an agitation if the fence work was not done within one week.
Assistant engineer Pruthibiraj Das said he was unaware of the exposed transformer. “I will probe into the incident and take up the matter with the higher-ups,” he added.
