Fake admission racket busted; 3 arrested

Bolangir: A team of Bolangir cyber police Friday busted a racket involved in cheating and duping money from aspirants all over the state on the pretext of giving admission to government medical colleges and arrested three persons in this regard. The racket was being operated from Capital Bhubaneswar. The accused were identified as Byasadeb Mohanty, 28, of Maa Mangala Sahi of Balaram Prasad village under Khandapada police limits in Nayagarh district, Abinash aka Kanha Purohit, 33, of Kendupada village in Phulbani district and Manas Parida, 31, of Jharapada in Bhubaneswar, a native of Odagaon in Nayagarh district.

Police seized Rs 1.90 lakh in cash, five mobile phones, six debit cards, four SIM cards, office furniture, diary, and other items from the possession of the accused. The bank accounts of the accused were also seized, informed Bolangir SP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo in a press conference Friday afternoon.

As per reports, the matter came to light after a complaint was lodged by Brundaban Meher, father of an aspirant of the Suryanagar Padmapur area at Bolangir Cyber and Economic Offences Wing October 4. A case (No-24/23) was registered as per the complaint at the police station.

As per his complaint, he was duped of Rs 16 lakh with a false promise to get her daughter’s admission at Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital, Bolangir. Even the accused sent emails regarding the admission of the girl from the forged domain mail ID of the medical college to win the trust of the victim. However, when the girl went to the college to take admission with a copy of the mail, she was told that the admission mail was fake and was not sent by the college.

As per the report, Brundaban’s daughter had not qualified in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), to take admitted to government medical colleges. So, she was willing to be admitted to a private medical college. A few days after the declaration of NEET results, Kalinga Academy of Baramunda Ruchika market allegedly contacted the girl and assured her of admission to a government medical college.

A special investigation team consisting Bolangir SP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo, cyber police station IIC Bharati Naik, sub-inspectors Abhinash Nayak, Akash Samal, S Barik, police from Bolangir Town PS and Sadar PS reached Bhubaneswar and sealed the Kalinga Academy office at Baramunda and arrested the three accused.
