Famed Odissi vocalist Sangita felicitated with twin awards

BHUBANESWAR: Odissi classical music has reached its peak once again with eminent Odissi singer Sangita Gosain receiving two national awards at Pune and New Delhi recently.

She had received the Malhar Abiskar award for her amazing contribution to Odissi music at pune classical music festival at Pune November 3, 2018. What really set the award ceremony apart from similar functions was the one-hour long performance of the awardee on the night of her felicitation.

Odissi music was moulded during the era of Jay deva who was a famous poet and composed brilliant lyrics that were meant for singing. By the 11th century AD, folk music of Odisha in the form of Triswari, Chatuhswari and Panchaswari was modified into the classical style. In fact, Odissi music was much older compared to Odia language according to researches.

King Kharvela was a great patron of Odissi music as its legacy was as old as 2nd century BC. Orissa Post interacted with the singer herself who was highly excited after winning her second award at SAMAPA (Stands for Sopari academy of Performing arts) New Delhi Saturday.

She said, “I am glad to be a recipient of this award. It is not about me being felicitated. Odissi music received acclamation from eminent singers in this award ceremony. My life-long hard work has truly paid off. Nowadays, people are looking forward to evenings of classical Odissi music.”

“Whether it’s a Champu or a bhajan by Jaydev, the music encompassing Odissi dance is like paradise for genuine Odissi lovers,” she added.

SAMAPA’s 14th Sangeet Sammelan at Kamani auditorium in New Delhi was a five-day fest from November 21 to 25, 2018. The event was jointly organised by Incredible India, Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India, IFFCO and JK bank. Gosain received Sangeet Tejasvi Sanmman for her contribution in national and international platforms. The award carried a cash prize of Rs 21,000.
