Sambalpur: Setting an example for others, families of Suman Dalei (15) and Sumit Das (15) donated their eyes Saturday, a day after the two drowned while taking bath in Jhankarapali power channel under Burla police limits in this district.
Though in mourning, families of both the boys were quite content to have done something good that will help some visually challenged persons to see the beauty of life.
Through such a noble gesture, the families want to keep the memory of their sons alive. “If our sons’ eyes are used for challenged persons, we will be happy,” said both the families with teary eyes.
“We will think that they are alive. We want to see them through their eyes that will give a new lease of life to some persons,” said the mothers of the deceased boys.
Medical authorities at Burla-based VSS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) operated on the eyes. “We have stored the eyes that will be transplanted,” said a senior doctor.
The two boys, Class X students of Sri Aurobindo School, had gone bathing with their friends after coaching classes Friday morning. They were pulled into the deep water and drowned.
Their friends tried to rescue them, but in vain. Later, a 10-member fire tender team had to be called to fish out the bodies.
