‘Fani’ aftermath: Odisha to submit detailed memorandum after door-to-door survey

Bhubaneswar: Odisha government will submit a detailed memorandum seeking assistance from the Center for the damages caused by the severe cyclonic storm ‘Fani’ towards the end of this month, Special Relief Commissioner Bishnupada Sethi said here Wednesday.

After a wrap up meeting with the visiting 11-member Central team who were here since May 12 and visited the worst hit cyclonic hit areas of Puri, Konark, Khurdha and Cuttack , Sethi said the memorandum would be made after a door-to-door survey of the affected people.

The survey, he said, would start from today.

An 11-member inter ministerial central team led by Additional Secretary Ministry of Home Affairs Vivek Bhardwaj arrived here on May 12 last to assess the damages caused by the cyclone Fani.

Sethi said  as per a preliminary assessment property worth Rs 12,000 crore was damaged in the cyclone but the figure is likely to rise further after the detail survey was completed.

The cyclone Fani had caused extensive damage to transportation, tourism, power, telecom, Railway structure, water supply, petrol pumps, summer crop and public infrastructures.

In the preliminary memorandum the state government put the tentative loss to public properties at Rs 11,94,268.13 crore.

Chief Secretary AP Padhi said the state government has not yet prepared the final memorandum as reports about the damages are still pouring in from the affected districts.

The final memorandum would be prepared after reports from all the cyclone affected districts was received, he said adding that the preliminary memorandum was prepared to help the central team assess the damage.
