‘Fani’ claims 4 lives in Mayurbhanj

Maheswar Bindhani was killed when a tree fell on this Scorpio vehicle he was driving

Baripada: Cyclone ‘Fani’ has claimed four lives apart from injuring at least two in Mayurbhanj district.

According to reports available Sunday, while three people were killed in Baripada town, another person died near Chakuliarsol road under Badasahi police limits. All were victims of trees falling on them.

The victims have been identified as Soumyakant Panda of Purnachandrapur ward – 25, Khetra Mohan Behera of Jugal village under Baisinga police limits, Goutam Kumar Mohanty of Bijayramchandrapur Murgabadi area ward-21 and Maheswar Bindhani of Dukura area under Badasahi police limits.

A tree fell on Soumyakant and his friend Khetra Mohan while the two were returning home on a motorbike after closing their shop Friday night. The two were crushed to death on the spot. Similarly, Goutam died after a tree fell on him while he was also returning from his shop. His younger brother Manash suffered injuries. ODRAF team along with Fire Services personnel removed the tree after being notified of the incident. Local cops have sent the body for autopsy.

In another incident, a huge tree came down on Maheswar’s vehicle while he was on his way to Udala from Baripada. He is a driver in the state health department. The incident occurred while he was returning home after dropping the departmental head in the district headquarters hospital (DHH).

These apart, a minor boy suffered injuries and is under treatment at Baripada government hospital. He has been identified as Manas Kumar Mohanty of Murgabadi village in ward-21.
