Farhan wards rule the roost

Bhubaneswar, July 8: It was a day when Farhan Ali’s wards took over proceedings in the under-16 girls’ singles final of the AITA-OITA Talent Series at the Kalinga Stadium tennis courts here Wednesday. In the summit clash, top seeded Rutuparna Choudhary defeated Ameek Kiran Batth 6-3, 6-1 to emerge champion.
Rutuparna was no doubt, the superior player among the two of Farhan’s students. But Ameek, in spite of losing the final, should hold her head high. She played in the higher age segment being an under-13 player herself. In the first set she fought to some extent, but then as the match progressed, the age factor and with it the power, tilted the match in Rutuparna’s favour.
Rutuparna ended the tournament without losing a single set and was the only player to have achieved a double bagel when she blanked Ayesha Swain in the semifinal. On her part, Ameek also surprised all with a victory over second-seeded Anaam Almas in the other semifinal which took place Tuesday.
