Nuapada: In a bizarre incident, a young farmer attempted suicide by consuming pesticide in his farmland Friday after allegedly failing to sell his paddy at a mandi in Nuapada district.

The 33-year-old farmer was identified as Romanchan Dandasena of Dhingiamunda village of Kendumunda panchayat under Sinapali block in the district.

According to sources, the family members of Dandasena found him in critical condition in his farmland in the afternoon. As he had consumed poison, the family immediately rushed him to nearby primary health centre (PHC) at Saradhapur in Nuapada district.

Later, Dandasena was shifted to Khariar sub-divisional hospital as his health condition deteriorated. The doctors treating him referred to Nuapada district headquarters hospital (DHH) for further treatment.

Notably, 85 bags of Dandasena’s paddy are lying at Kendumunda mandi. The young farmer failed to sell his crop as one-month’s validity of the token issued to him had expired after February 17.
