Farmer ends life over crop loss

Bargarh/Barpali: A farmer ended his life by consuming poison over crop loss due to hailstorm at Julta village, police said Thursday. The deceased was Gobardhan Barik (38), son of Seshadev Barik.

He was rushed in a critical condition to a hospital at Barpali in Bargarh district, where the end came. Police registered a case of unnatural death and sent the body for post-mortem. Revenue inspector Bishnupriya Bhoi started an investigation.

Gobardhan had raised paddy in two acres, but the recent hailstorm destroyed the crop completely. He had taken a loan for the cultivation, and was worried over repayment of the money, his family said.

He attempted suicide by consuming poison Tuesday. Later he succumbed while undergoing treatment at Burla hospital, said Shatrughna Barik, younger brother of Gobardhan.
