Binika: A youth sustained grievous injuries after he was accidentally caught in a trap laid by poachers for hunting wild boar near Lalsahaji School at Binika-Gulunda road in Subarnapur district, early Tuesday morning.
The youth has been identified as Prasant Thanapati (40). Sources said, the incident occurred when Prasant had gone to water his crops using a motor pump.
When the motor pump stopped due to some technical glitches, he went to search for a prick to fix a note. Meanwhile, he fell into the trap and injured his leg critically. Hearing his screams, fellow farmers working in nearby fields came to his rescue.
Prasant was taken to Binika community health centre (CHC) and, as his condition worsened, he was shifted to Burla-based VSS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) for further treatment.
Poaching in the area has become a matter of concern as many people are into killing wild boars, deer and rabbits. They spread electric wires and traps to catch the animals. But, it poses as risk for humans too, a resident said.
While many justified that they were forced to fix the traps to catch the animals that stray into their agricultural lands and destroy their crops, others were convinced that it was a crime and demanded strict actions against the poachers.
