Khordha: A farmer sustained critical injuries after being attacked by an elephant near a farmhouse at Rameswar in Khordha district Wednesday morning.
The injured has been identified as Pankaj Biswal.
According to locals, a herd of 18-20 elephants had Tuesday damaged crops and agricultural equipment near the farmhouse.
Pankaj Biswal, a farmer and caretaker of the farmhouse, went to the farmland early Wednesday morning to take stock of the situation, during which an elephant attacked him with its tusks following which Biswal suffered grievous injuries on his hands and waist.
Locals spotted him lying in a critical state at the farmland and immediately rushed him to the Khordha District Headquarters Hospital (DHH).
On being informed, the forest officials reached the place and started an investigation into the matter.
Notably, a man Jharu Behera, sustained grievous injuries after an elephant attacked him at Patakumunda village under Chhendipada forest range in Angul district October 5.
According to forest officials, Jharu had gone to the forest in the morning to relieve himself when an elephant attacked him. The elephant picked the victim on its trunk and tossed him to the ground. He sustained grievous injuries on his head, hand and chest following the attack.
