Farmers call of protest at Lakhimpur Kheri after UP government announces hefty compensation

New Delhi: The agitating farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri, who have been protesting over the violence that left eight persons dead, have decided to call of their protests. They took the decision to end their protests from ‘Ground Zero’ the site of the violence, after the Uttar Pradesh government announced hefty compensations for the dead and the injured. The UP government said that Rs 45 lakh will be paid to each of the farmers’ families who died. Similarly, the families of the injured will receive a compensation of Rs 10 lakh. This announcement was made at a press conference Monday attended by ADG (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar.

The top cop also said that a case has been registered against Union minister Ajay Mishra’s son, Ashish Mishra. Farmers have alleged that Ashish waswas driving the vehicle and mowed down the protesters, which triggered the violence. The protesters were trying to stop Sunday the visit of the Union Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya.

After a meeting with the police Monday morning, the farmers agreed to cremate the bodies of the four people who were allegedly mowed down by the car. Several others were injured. Four others died in the violence that followed. Police said that the bodies of the deceased will be released to their respective families after post-mortem.

The police have assured the farmers that the investigation will take place on basis of the complaints filed by families of the deceased.

Congress’s Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who was arrested while on way to Lakhimpur Kheri, said she was manhandled by the police.
