Farmers fume over defunct irrigation point

Champua: Contrary to the government’s claim that it has been working to boost irrigation, farmers of Godhuli under Champua NAC in Keonjhar district alleged that they were unable to make use of an irrigation point which has been lying defunct for the last six months.

The pump set of the irrigation point has conked out due to a lightning strike, the farmers said.

They lamented that they have been unable to irrigate their farmland. “Six months have passed, but the irrigation point has not been repaired despite repeated reminders to the officials concerned. We are helpless now,” said some famers.

They said that they were deprived of raising wheat and vegetables due to lack of irrigation facility.

Assistant engineer of lift irrigation Haladhar Senapati said steps were being taken to repair the irrigation point. A transformer has been sanctioned for the purpose, but it has not reached Champua yet.

Farmers Iswar Nayak, Biswanth Nayak, Sunil Kumar Nayak, Yudhistir Nayak and Nabina Nayak demanded that the administration take immediate steps for the irrigation point’s repair.
