Farmers in distress as water-logging rots paddy plants

Padmapur: Unseasonal rain induced by cyclonic storm Titli has stopped but floodwater from rivers Dhala, Kanchudi, Mantei and Dhanutri is yet to drain out into the sea and continues to rot paddy plants in acres of land in various parts of Bhadrak district.

Thousands of farmers were distressed over the problem in Sabarang, Sahada and Goramati under Sadar block and Padmapur, Edatal, Sugo, Lunga and Jagannath Prasad under Basudevpur block.

Local farmers alleged that while crops have been damaged by floodwater, no insurance firms have visited the fields for assessment.

Some villages like Dadhibamanpur, Bandhasahi, Moujudi, Dangamala, Sunabhuin, Maliksahi and Badakia were still marooned. Though the block administration has been apprised of the damage caused to paddy cultivation and miseries of the locals, no steps have been taken to ameliorate the situation, locals alleged.
