Farmer’s suicide triggers tension in Ganjam

Ganjam: Tension prevailed at Digapahandi tehsil office in Ganjam district Wednesday after the death of a farmer at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.

Ramachandra Pradhan of Hatiadi village under Digapahandi block had allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide due to crop loss and debt burden.

He was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition. However, he died Tuesday night.

According to reports, Ramachandra had cultivated paddy in his agricultural land but suffered crop loss due to deficit rainfall and lack of proper irrigation facilities. Unable to bear the loan burden, Ramachandra, who was under severe mental stress, took the extreme step.

Some local BJP activists gheraoed the tehsil office, demanding compensation for the kin of the deceased.
