Fed up over admin neglect, villagers lay road themselves

Mahakalpara: Fed up over negligence of the administration despite repeated pleas, residents of Sabarpada village under Mahakalpara block in Kendrapara district took upon themselves to construct a concrete road to the village with a view to ease commuter’s sufferings.

Earlier, they had approached the administration on several occasions for the road, but it yielded no results.

Left with no option, they decided to construct the road by collecting money and self labour. Some of the villagers donated cement packets, a few came up with sand and chips, while others offered manual services for the venture. People from all age groups were seen working at the site.

Notably, around 100 people of 28 families reside in the village and depend on this stretch of the road to reach panchayat and block office for daily needs. However, the bad road condition made it worse for them.

Especially, pregnant women, schoolchildren and elderly persons were the worst sufferers. Moreover, the incessant has further compounded their woes with artificial pits dug out on the road.

It may be noted that due to lack of a proper motorable road to the village, a pregnant women had delivered a newborn alongside the road after ambulance failed to reach the village. This triggered resentment among the villagers who decided to lay the road all by themselves, paying from their pocket.

When contacted, BDO Ramesh Chandra Sethy said that a road construction work to the village under MGNREGS has began from June. However, the work was delayed due to the rain.

He assured to look into the matter and begin the construction work.
