Nilagiri: Police arrested a female friend of a girl student who was found hanging from a ceiling fan of a hostel room run by the SC and ST welfare department under Nilagiri police limits in Balasore district, Sunday.
It was suspected that the girl after returning from college had locked herself inside her room and hanged herself. The matter came to the fore when her friends found the room bolted from inside and broke open the door only to find her hanging from the ceiling fan.
IIC Nalita Modi confirmed the arrest. Police said the deceased was a third year Arts student in Nilagiri Women’s College and a native of Basulidega.
A girl student (Plus III Science) of another college was staying in a private mess close to the hostel. Over years, the two girls got closer and intimate to each other.
Sources said whenever the two did not see each other, they would chat on cell phones. It was learnt that the day before the student committed suicide, she had shown some unusual behaviour towards her friend.
The latter was fed up with the former and did not respond to her calls for some days. This might have hurt the deceased student.
The two did not reveal their friendship to their families. It was suspected that the latter separated over the issue. The other girl could not tolerate the separation and took this drastic step, it is surmised.
Police had recovered a suicide note from the hostel and registered a case on the basis of a complaint lodged by hostel superintendent Binapani Das.
