Cuttack: The Fire Services department would soon conduct an audit on the buildings of Sriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) here.
According to sources, the Fire Brigade department would charge Rs 2 to audit each square metre area of a building. “Several incidents of fire have been reported from the premium healthcare institute in recent years. The Fire Brigade department would conduct audits to check similar incidents in future. The Fire Brigade authorities have asked the Works department to submit details regarding the buildings to be audited during the drive,” said a source in the SCBMCH.
It is learnt that the hospital authorities would also engage experts to inspect water supply system, structural status of buildings and power supply system to avoid any untoward incident in Future. “Soon after completion of all these inspections and audits, a report would be submitted to the state government,” said an official of SCBMCH.
According to sources, SCBMCH principal Jayshree Mohanty has recently convened a high-level meeting to deliberate on fire safety measures at the health institute. Officials of Fire Brigade department, Works department, Public Health Engineering Organisation (PHEO), General Electrical Department and Central Electricity Supply Utility (Cesu) participated in the meeting.
“The meeting deliberated on the fire safety measures available at the hospital and also emphasised on additional measures to avoid mishaps,” added the official.
It is worth mentioning here that the cytology unit of SCBMCH Pathology department was gutted when fire broke out a few days ago.
Prior to that, incidents of fire were reported from the Plastic Surgery department, central ICU and Cardiology department.
Taking the issue seriously, the Orissa High Court had directed the state government to establish a fire station on the hospital premises. Subsequently, a fire station was set up at SCBMCH.
“We would introduce appropriate measures to strengthen the fire safety and power safety systems at the hospital,” said SCBMCH superintendent CBK Mohanty.
