Flood-like situation threatens some places in Jajpur district

Jajpur: An embankment of the Kani River which is a distributary of the Baitarani river in Jajpur district has been breached near Mallikapur panchayat leading to a flood-like situation. The river was flowing two metres above the danger mark at around 8.00am in the morning near Dasarathpur block. The Mallikapur panchayat is under the Dasarathpur block.

Sources said that the danger mark at Dasarathpur is 9.52 metres. However, water is flowing at a height of 11.60 metres. The water from the Kani river has inundated hundreds of acres of farmlands, officials said.

Notably, the swelling of Baitarani River induced by heavy rains following the very severe cyclonic storm ‘Yaas’ has led to flood-like situation in three blocks of Jajpur district. The administration has asked local villagers residing in low-lying areas to shift to safer places.

The floodwater level at Akhuapada in Bhadrak district stood at 18.98 metres Thursday night and dropped to 18.90 metres Friday morning. However, it is still well above the danger level of 17.83 metres, the official informed.
