The contribution of oral bacteria in promoting Covid-19 infection is often overlooked. Controlling overall microbial development in the mouth, maintaining or restoring the oral symbiotic balance, and avoiding the transfer of oral bacteria to other parts of the body require good oral hygiene.
Tips for maintaining good oral hygiene:
Clean and disinfect your toothbrush
Coronavirus can survive for up to three days on any surface, including toothbrushes. You can also disinfect your toothbrush by soaking it in 0.5 per cent hydrogen peroxide for about 15 minutes on a daily basis. In less than a minute, this solution can kill Covid-19 bacteria.
Replace your toothbrush
Every 3 to 4 months, one should replace their electric toothbrush head or use a disposable toothbrush. Dentists advise replacing them more frequently during the pandemic, at least every three months.
Store your toothbrush properly
Allow the toothbrush to dry completely after each use by keeping it upright. This helps to prevent bacteria from spreading and growing.
Wash your hands regularly
To avoid the transmission of Covid-19, the guidelines recommend washing your hands for at least 20 seconds several times a day. Wash your hands right after returning home. Using a hand sanitiser that has at least 60% alcohol is equally helpful.
Avoid touching your face and mouth
Do not touch your face, lips, mouth, eyes, or ears with dirty hands, in addition to frequently washing your hands and cleaning your home. Avoid biting your nails as well.
