Bhubaneswar: Odisha unit of directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) Tuesday seized 400 cigarette packets of foreign origin from two Malaysian passengers at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar.
Both of them reached here from Malaysia by Air Asia flight AK 31.
The total value of the seized cigarettes is pegged at Rs12 lakh.
According to a DRI release, the officials had received intelligence inputs about the two passengers smuggling foreign origin cigarettes and accordingly they were identified and intercepted. As many as 80,000 pieces of foreign origin cigarettes of Marlboro brand were recovered from them.
The said goods were concealed in their checked-in baggage. During examination, it was found that none of the 400 cigarette packets contain the prescribed statutory and pictorial warning printed / affixed on them.
The recovered cigarettes were seized. Further investigation is on.
