Former Odisha cricket captain Prashant Mohapatra succumbs to COVID-19 related complications

Bhubaneswar: Former Ranji Trophy player and captain of the Odisha cricket team Prashant Mohapatra succumbed to COVID-19 related complications Wednesday morning, while undergoing treatment at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here, a source said.

According to AIIMS superintendent Sachidananda Mohanty, the former cricket captain had been put on ventilator support. His health condition worsened in the last couple of days. A special team of doctors had been constantly monitoring his health condition and treating him at the hospital. However, he did not respond to the treatment since Tuesday night leading to his untimely death this morning.

Prashant was the youngest son of late sculptor and Rajya Sabha MP Raghunath Mohapatra. Raghunath’s eldest son Jashobant is also undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed his deep condolences on the sad demise of Prashant and consoled the bereaved family.

Notably, at the age of 78, the Padma Vibhushan awardee Raghunath had also earlier succumbed to COVID-19 while undergoing treatment at the AIIMS May 9. He had been admitted to AIIMS April 22.
