New Delhi: Justices Indira Banerjee, Vineet Saran and K M Joseph were Tuesday sworn in as judges of the Supreme Court in order of seniority notified by the Centre. Saran also served as the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court from 2016.
The Chief Justice of India Justice Dipak Mishra Tuesday administered oath to all the three newly-nominated judges after their elevation as per the recommendations of the SC collegium, followed by the notification of the Union government.
The swearing in ceremony commenced at 10:30 am, the opening time of the SC court rooms in the Chief Justice Court room in the apex court premises, The courtroom which hosts judges bench, lawyers’ seat rows and gallery for media and petitioners were seen fully crowded to witness the ceremony. The lawyers and other attending members in the courtroom were seen jostling with each other to become spectators of the event.
The oath was administered under the CJI supervision as per the government’s notification. The CJI administered oath to Justice Indira Banerjee, Justice Vineet Saran and Justice KM Joseph who have recently been nominated and were slated to join the judicial team of the apex court of India
However, controversies marred the whole decision earlier as the Union government had earlier opposed the name of Justice Joseph. The Collegium however had sent Joseph’s name twice to the government. Aftermath the controversy, the government determined Joseph’s seniority on the basis of the appointment as the judges of High Court which also stirred another controversy.
