Forum to screen timeless classic

BHUBANESWAR: Formed in 2011, Film Journalist Forum has screened 15 old Odia films till date to urge contemporary Odia producers to rise from their slumber. In their latest effort, the group will screen ‘Rakta Golapa’ (1977) at Jayadev Bhawan April 29.

Actors of the movie Suresh Mishra, Banja Mohanty, singer Pranab Pattnaik, producers Ramesh Panigrahi and Shasanka Sekhar Mishra will be felicitated at the event. The film was a work of Banani Films, Jeypore.

It is based on a play titled ‘Pagala’ by Bijay Nanda. The music director of the movie was Dhananjay Satpathy. Two tracks by Akshay Mohanty ‘Mamtara Madhumati Sarami Latika’ and ‘Bhola Re Bhola Tora Budila Bhela’ are still very popular among music lovers of the state.

Odisha movie making started in the year 1936. The first Odia production, a talkie, Sita Bibaha, was made by Mohan Sundar Deb Goswami in 1936. Drawn from the Indian epic Ramayana, the story is about the marriage of Sita and Ram. After 83 years of the movie, it’s safe to say that Odia movies have failed to reach their potential.

The forum is also documenting a 16-page palm book where details of all these movies will be documented. In the past, such screenings have witnessed huge crowds as people have shown a deep love for such timeless classics. Orissa Post interacted with the movie’s actor Suresh Mishra and playback singer Pranab Pattnaik to delve deeper into the subject.

Suresh Mishra feels that the movie has created a trend of lyrical story telling along with a magical script and it always will remain a classic. Pranab Patnaik said, “Rakta Golap is a wonderful movie and its screening will give movie lovers an opportunity to watch it on a big screen. It’s an entertainment package filled with soulful music, impactful dialogues and lively acting.”
