Bargarh: Tension ran high at the new bus stand here in this district Tuesday after the members of the local bus owners’ association claimed foul play over the construction of a market complex.
As per reports, the place was reportedly meant for construction of a new private bus stand. However, the District Municipal authorities allegedly constructed a market complex at the site, spreading outrage.
Irate members of the Bus Owner’s Association Tuesday demanded a probe into the incident. They staged a road blockade and shouted slogans.
“Actually, the site and funds were allocated for the construction of a new bus stand behind the existing one. But, the municipality officials misutilised the funds and constructed a market complex with nearly 200 shops to reap benefits,” convener of the Bargarh Private Bus Owners’ Association, Debadatta Mishra said.
“Once the market complex opens, it will not only cause inconvenience for the passengers, but also create space constraint for the movement of the buses leading to traffic jam,” he added.
The Private Bus Owners’ Association later met the Additional District Collector (ADM) in this regard and submitted a memorandum demanding construction of a full-fledged bus stand by demolishing the market complex.
They warned of mass demonstration if no steps were taken in this regard. Accepting the memorandum, Additional Collector of Bargarh, Tukaram Majhi, assured that steps would be taken after consulting the concerned officials.
“I have had a discussion with the bus association members. Necessary steps will be taken after due consultation with the municipality executive officer and other concerned officials,” Majhi said.
