Jagannathprasad: As many as four houses of four families were gutted in a massive fire that broke out at Khandala slum in Kudutai village under Tarasingh police limits of Ganjam district late Tuesday night.
Goods and furniture worth lakh of rupees were gutted in the blaze, said locals even though an official estimation of damage caused by the fire is yet to be done.
The reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained.
The houses belonged to Kumari Nayak, Rajendra Nayak, Hari Nayak and Binod Nayak of Kudutai village. They are daily laborers and were not at their houses at the time of the incident.
According to Fire services personnel, the fire erupted at one of the houses in the village and the blaze engulfed the nearby houses within a few minutes.
Locals informed the Fire services personnel who rushed to the spot to douse the flames. But four of the houses were gutted by the time the rescue personnel reached the spot.
The four families have demanded compensation under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
