Koraput: A wooden bridge —  used as the only medium of communication — was washed away following heavy rains and subsequently four villages became inaccessible in Odisha’s Koraput district, a source said Saturday.

The bridge was built over Poda River connecting Girliguma gram panchayat under Dasmanthpur block to the mainland in Koraput district.

According to the source, the villagers have been stranded in their homes for the last two days as there is no alternate way of communication. Besides, school-going children are missing out on their regular classes.

The source further informed that the villagers had previously put forward their demand of constructing a permanent bridge before the district administration. However, nobody paid heed to their demand.

A block administration official stated that an estimate of Rs30 lakh was granted for bridge construction in the area.

However, the project was later put off as a bigger bridge is required in the region and it will be granted soon, the official added.
