Bhubaneswar: The fifth national training programme on ‘Installation and Operation of Freshwater Aquaculture Production (FRP) Carp Hatchery’ was inaugurated at ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) here Tuesday.
RK Singh, project coordinator, ICAR-All India Coordinated Research Project on Plasticulture Engineering and Technology (AICRP-PET) and director, ICAR-Central Institute of Post Harvest Engineering and Technology, Ludhiana, inaugurated the event.
Singh said the AICRP-PET at ICAR-CIFA has contributed immensely to the farming community and developed several farmer friendly technologies and gadgets such as FRP carp hatchery.
Presiding over the event, Bindu R Pillai, director of ICAR-CIFA, said the AICRP-PET centre has been functioning at ICAR-CIFA, Bhubaneswar, since 1988 and developed several gadgets for aqua farmers. The FRP carp hatchery which was released in 2006 has gone to 26 states and is in high demand for quality fish seed production, she stated.
BC Mohapatra, principal scientist and project leader, AICRP-PET, ICAR-CIFA, and course director of the programme highlighted the importance of the training programme for hatchery users. The institute, since 2011, has been conducting regular training programmes on installation and operation of FRP carp hatchery.
The training programme would continue till July 27 and deliberate on the portable FRP carp hatchery technology in details. Around 40 participants from Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Telangana and Odisha are participating in the programme. It may be worth mentioning here that around 400 units of the hatchery have been transported to 26 states. Officials said in a single operation, it produces 1-1.2 million fish seeds; moreover, it is mobile, easy to install, operate and maintain.
