Bhubaneswar: The special squad of Commissionerate Police Saturday arrested a fugitive accused involved in a gang rape case after seven years of his escape from police custody. The accused was identified as Bhaskar Sahoo of Odagaon in Nayagarh district.
According to sources, the accused Sahoo along with three others had kidnapped the victim near the Sai Temple at Tankapani area of the city February 13, 2014. They had taken her to Kalapathara in Nayagarh district where they raped the victim.
Later, a case was registered with the Bhubaneswar Mahila Police station here on the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim. Police swung into action and arrested all the four accused persons including Sahoo the next day. All the four accused were later sent to Jharpada special jail under judicial custody.
Meanwhile, Sahoo managed to escape from the jail while being taken to court for hearing December 9, 2014. Sahoo later moved outside the state to avoid arrest.
However, he recently returned to his village after he lost his job due to the Covid induced lockdown.
The police arrested Sahoo under a special operation ‘Wild escape’, recently launched by the city police to nab wanted and fugitive accused persons.
