Bhubaneswar, July 21: Mountaineer Ganesh Jena is all set to scale Europe’s highest peak Mount Elbrus and he will leave for his mission here Wednesday.
Ganesh will lead a six-member Indian team, which will head towards the Caucasus mountain region in Russia, where Elbrus is situated.
During a press conference Tuesday, former sports and youth services director Dr Bimalendu Mohanty and former assistant director Ashok Mohanty flagged off Jena’s expedition.
Speaking on his upcoming venture, Jena said, “This is the first time that a climber from India will traverse the Elbrus. We will start our journey July 26 from the base camp and would reach the peak by September 2.”
“Adventure sports are something which every youth must follow. It is an integral part of the youth services. But it’s not easy to overcome the hurdles which come in the process. I am sure Ganesh will be successful in his mission,” Bimalendu said.
Orissa end on a low
Sambit Panda and Mahitosh Dey faltered at the last stage to finish joint third and fifth respectively in the U-11 Open Chess Championships at Pondicherry, which concluded Tuesday. Vaibhav Singh was the only state player to claim a win as he checkmated Sanket Chakravarty to move up a rung to end joint fifth in the final rankings.
Sambit, who was joint second lost to R Praggananandha of TN, who eventually emerged champion with 9.5 points. Mahitosh on the other hand had a disappointing finish as he was beaten by A Sarvesh Kumar. Sambit and Mahitosh ended up with 8 and 7 points respectively.
Sepak Takraw Tourney
The 19th National Sepak Takraw Championship will be held at the Kalinga Stadium, here, December 3-6. To organise the event successfully, Orissa State Sepak Takraw Association formed a 10-member working committee Tuesday, which will be headed by the association’s president, Jagannath Pradhan.
