Sundargarh: Acting on a tip-off, Sundargarh town police Friday arrested four ganja smugglers, including a woman. All four are native of Uttar Pradesh. The cops seized the contraband worth Rs 5 lakh, Rs 15,830 in cash and a Maruti car from their possession.
The arrested smugglers have been identified as Bishnu Sharma (40), Kedar Singh (46), Mahesh Kumar (36) and Rekha Sharma. All of them are natives of Mathura area in Uttar Pradesh, a police source said.
The arrested men and the woman were produced in a local court and remanded to judicial custody as their bail pleas were rejected.
The police said they were smuggling the contraband from Ummerkote to Mathura via Sundargarh. After getting a tip-off from a reliable source, Sundargarh SP alerted Town police station IIC Bibatsa Pradhan. Immediately a team led by the IIC rushed to Rani Bagicha square on Biju Express and detained the car (HR-51 AW 9557). Upon searching the vehicle, ganja weighing 67.1kg were found concealed.
A detail investigation is underway to unravel the modus operandi of the smugglers.
