Chhatrapur: The Ganjam district police have installed the ‘Dial 100’ toll-free telephone service at the SP’s office instead of police stations to make police officials more accountable towards the public, a report said.
This was done to bridge the gap between the people and the police, and to create a people-friendly image for the department, it was learnt.
A staffer at the SP’s office will receive incoming calls on the toll-free telephone number and register the complaints, including the name and address of the complainants. The complaints will then be forwarded to police stations for action.
The police stations will take steps to address the complaints and submit action taken reports to the SP.
The Ganjam SP and other senior officers will review the complaints and action taken. They may order further action if the action taken by the police do not satisfy the SP.
Earlier, a call to the toll-free telephone service would ring at police stations. The service was shifted to the SP’s office after people met the SP and lodged complaints of police inaction on their complaints.
SP Brijesh Kumar Rai said the move has greatly helped people in registering complaints. People living in the remote Karsingh, Sorada and Gajalbadi areas are now calling the toll-free number and registering complaints.
The SP said his mobile phone number is displayed at all rice distribution centres in the district, and that people can call his number and register complaints. The IICs and OICs of all police stations have been given an official SIM so that people can call and register complaints, he added.
