Garbage wrecks Khandapara’s drainage system

Khandapara: The heavy and incessant rains in the past few weeks have battered Khandapara town leading to the choking of drains with garbage along the main roads.

The drains are mostly clogged with polythene covers, solid waste and other non-biodegradable material. The chocked drains are overflowing and the roads of the town have got submerged with contaminated water.

The residents are a worried lot due to the threat of epidemics like malaria, dengue and jaundice in the town. The inertia of the civic authorities has sparked resentment among the residents.

The drain extending from Rathagada Square to Kar Sahi on the busy road of the small town under Ward No. 5 is the worst affected.

The drain in ward No. 3 coming under Mardarajpur panchayat and the drain beside the Kantilo-Khandapara unit of the Works Department are in the same condition.

The blockage caused by huge piles of garbage in the area has stopped passage of water under a culvert at Mardarajpur Chhak, said the residents.

The people have asked the civic authorities to immediately clear the drains, cover them with concrete slabs and to take other preventive measures.
