Girl dies in ashram school; HM, hostel superintendent detained

Baripada: A Class VIII girl student died under mysterious circumstances at Manida Government Girls’ High school (ashram school) in Rasgobindpur area of Mayurbhanj district Tuesday morning.

The deceased was identified as Babita Patra. Police detained headmaster Prahallad Majhi and hostel superintendent Gurubari Singh while an investigation is on, said SDPO Gobinda Chandra Sethi.

 

Babita was sick since Monday morning. She was given some medicines at the hostel. Later, the headmaster admitted her to Rasgobindapur hospital at 8.30 pm. As her condition worsened, she was taken to PRM Medical College and Hospital in Baripada where she was declared dead.

As the matter came to the fore, tension prevailed in the area. Her kin and local leaders of BJP and JMM staged a road blockade and demanded a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the bereaved family.

 

Police personnel were deployed at the ashram school. Meanwhile, the district administration has provided Rs 50,000 to the bereaved family while Rs 2 lakh will be paid later, said additional district welfare officer Minaketan Mangraj.

However, the exact reason behind the death of the girl is yet to be established. A complaint was lodged by an uncle of the deceased. Police registered a case and started a probe into the incident.
