Girls aren’t parees, they are humans: BJP

BJP women's wing president Pravati Parida addresses media at the party office in Bhubaneswar, Monday

Bhubaneswar: The women’s wing of the state BJP has alleged that police officials are refusing to file FIRs on crimes against women.
Addressing the media here at the party office after the 11-day long Mahila Surakhya Yatra, BJP women’s wing president Pravati Parida said Monday, “Out of about 500 police stations in the state, officers of 272 have not been accepting FIRs on crimes against women. During our save women campaign many women complained about this to us.”
Alleging that cops were acting at the behest of the ruling BJD, Parida said, “As the BJD are sheltering criminals the police are not accepting FIRs on crimes against women.”
Criticising the ‘Paree Pain Katha Tiye’ campaign of the police against child sexual abuse she said, “Our girls are not parees, they are humans. They should be given adequate protection according to Constitutional provisions. Let the police first treat them as human beings and ensure their rights.”
The BJP leader alleged that unlicensed liquor shops were mushrooming in every district due to the unholy nexus between BJD leaders and the mafia. “This alarming rise in the crime rate is due to the wanton consumption of liquor,” she said. BJP activists said they will seek the intervention of the President, Governor and the Union Home Minister on this issue.
Parida said the Morcha, during its 11-day campaign, had visited all the 147 Assembly constituencies covering 10,546 km and organised 213 roadside meetings and 155 public meetings and interacted with about 3,60,000 women.
Reacting to the allegations of Parida, BJD spokesperson Sulochana Das said, “They launched the Mahila Suraksha Yatra only to strengthen BJP’s base in the state and not for women. As Congress has started gaining ground in the state the BJP is desperately trying to remain number two in Odisha.”
Sulochana dismissed the BJP’s allegation that some police stations are not accepting FIRs saying, “As far as the crime rate is concerned, three BJP-ruled states occupy the top three positions in the country, according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data.”
