Germany: Berlin’s government said Thursday that soon women will be allowed to go topless in the city’s public swimming pools just like men. Actually, the decision came after a woman who was not allowed into Berlin’s public pool for topless sunbathing initiated legal action on grounds of discrimination.
According to a PTI report, the woman demanded equal treatment at the senate’s ombudsperson’s office. She argued that, like men, women should also get the right to swim topless. However, the identity of the complaining woman has not been revealed.
In reaction to the complaint and the ombudsman’s involvement in the case, the Berliner Badebetriebe, which runs the city’s public pools, decided to change its clothing rules, the statement said.
It was not immediately clear when exactly the new bathing rules would be applied.
Notably, in the past, women who bared their breasts at Berlin pools were asked to cover themselves or to leave the pool and were sometimes banned from returning.
